Every ten years since 1801 (except 1941) the government has carried out a Census of the population throughout the United Kingdom. The latest one took place on 29th April 2001. Questions were asked of the whole population on topics including age, gender, economic activity, ethnicity, qualifications, limiting long term illness, housing tenure and car availability. This provided a snapshot of the whole Country and a wealth of detailed information available at a very small area level.
