Background Information
There are currently 20 very active Community Councils in East Lothian, encompassing the whole district. They vary considerably in size of electorates and in terms of area covered. The East Lothian Council Scheme for Community Councils is currently being reviewed and may result in a few changes. The next Community Council elections will be held in May this year.
East Lothian Council is committed to the development of community councils, helping to provide them with a meaningful role and the opportunity to have a significant influence over how funding is spent in their area. They are consulted fully on a range of issues, are involved in any new East Lothian Council initiatives, have a dedicated Community Council Liaison Officer and training courses are arranged periodically. Officials and elected members are readily contactable for advice or consultation.
Financial support to community councils in East Lothian has always been amongst the best in the country, with the provision of an administration grant, and Local Priority Scheme and, more recently, the Capital Improvement Grant Scheme. Under the Local Priority Scheme, each community council is granted a significant amount of money annually, to spend how they choose in their area.
