All 12 libraries in East Lothian now provide free public access to the Internet through the People’s Network.

The People's Network consists of 60 computers, located in all East Lothian public libraries. These computers are available for public use during normal library opening hours, completely free of charge.

Printing facilities are also available (costs are 10p per black and white sheet, and 50p for colour)

What software do you get?

Microsoft Office 2000 which includes modules on word processing, spreadsheets, presentations and databases.

Is that all you get – the PCs and the software?
No, there’s plenty more:

There’s a scanner at each site, allowing you to copy, save or e-mail documents or illustrations. But do ensure you comply with copyright law.

At least one PC at each site has a CD Writer. Burn your own CDs to take home. But do ensure you comply with copyright law.

Before you use the People’s Network we ask you to sign that you agree to our acceptable use policy and we give you a free membership card. If you already have a library card for borrowing books, it doubles up as your membership card.

A couple of don’ts of the Internet and chat rooms

Never give your name, address or e-mail to anyone you ‘meet’ on the Internet or through a chat room. See  Safekids and  Get Safe Online web sites for more detailed information.

Hints and tips for social networking sites.

Only enter credit card details on a secure site, and always remember to log out after you’ve used your credit card.

We advise you to book your slot in advance,as the PCs are in great demand. You can book sessions of up to 1 hour during library opening times.
