Parental Involvement Act

Education Convener, Peter MacKenzie

Tell us how you would like to get involved

Changes have recently been made to the law to help parents and schools work together as partners in children’s learning. The Scottish Parliament has passed the Scottish Schools (Parental Involvement) Act 2006 to encourage and support more parents to become involved.

Because you have such a vital role to play in your children’s education, the Act aims to make it easier for you to become involved in your own child’s education and in your child’s school more generally. In East Lothian, schools and parents are already working together to make sure that every parent can be more involved in their child’s education and what happens at school.  From now on, every parent is a member of their school's Parents' Forum and if you want to be even more 'hands-on', find out more about your school's Parent Council.

We are finalising our Parental Involvement Strategy, which parents contributed to earlier this Autumn.   We hope that it sets out the issues that you have told us we need to address. I've put the Draft Strategy on the list below this article so you can see what we have been talking about.  It also shows how you can get more involved in your school.  If you want to find out more about what's happening in your school:

  • phone your school office, or
  • speak to a member of staff, or
  • visit your school's web site, if it has one,
  • have a look at our Edubuzz site, or
  • contact Val McIntyre at vmcintyre@eastlothian.gov.uk or phone her on 01620 827 228.
