| Woman buying buttons from a peddlar, Haddington 1930s |
If you want to find out about shops in Haddington, a volunteer has created a list giving snapshots from 1910, 1914, 1919 and 1924.
One place few people tend to look for their ancestors is in local clubs and societies. In the past almost everyone would have been in a club or society. Although many of the records are now lost (but some do survive) the lists of office holders for clubs and societies in Haddington can be an unexpectedly valuable resource.
Between 1912 and 1971 anyone wishing to sell goods door-to-door would have required a Pedlar Certificate. They were issued by Haddingtonshire Constabulary and lasted for a year. We have a list of each of these pedlars.
