Young People in East Lothian

The Community Learning and Development (CLD) Service:

  • Works in partnership with other agencies
  • Works particularly with those who find it hard to access services
  • Brings more resources into communities
  • Helps local people to have more say in how resources are used

CLD is responsible for a wide range of functions including; managing community facilities, developing youth work and community based adult learning, working with local community groups to achieve their goals and helping people back into employment.

We provide informal learning and social development opportunities for individuals and groups across East Lothian. This work aims to strengthen communities through enhancing people’s knowledge, skills and confidence, organisational capacity and resources.

CLD contributes to improving public services, promoting community regeneration, social justice, lifelong learning and active citizenship.

CLD currently has responsibility for the following main activities:

  • Community centre management
  • Adult Literacies
  • Adult education
  • Community based adult learning Guidance (educational and career)
  • Youth work
  • Village halls
  • Dialogue Youth
  • Outreach youth work
  • Drop-in youth facilities
  • Training programmes for youth workers, management committees, adult education tutors etc.
  • Community economic development
  • Support to voluntary organisations
  • Support to East Lothian Learning Partnership (ELLP)
  • Duke of Edinburgh’s Award scheme
  • Support to the John Muir Award

CLD works with people vulnerable to social exclusion in East Lothian

  • Young people in transition to adulthood
  • Looked after children and young people
  • People with disabilities
  • People with mental health issues
  • Substance misusers
  • Offenders and ex-offenders
  • Ethnic minorities
  • Gypsy travellers
  • Carers
  • Single parents
  • Older people
  • People on low income, with or without employment
  • People living in isolated rural areas
