Breastfeeding-friendly premises in East Lothian

The ‘Breastfeeding in Scotland Act 2005’ makes it an offence to prevent or stop a person in charge of a child feeding that child milk in a public space. This means that any person should be able to feed a child when required and in the most appropriate place for them, without the fear of interruption or criticism.
However, the East Lothian Health Promotion Network is keen to promote awareness of the health benefits of breastfeeding, and a positive attitude to mothers feeding in public places. To support mothers we have developed a register of premises that are ‘Breastfeeding Friendly’. This means that the premises have met the following criteria:

  • encourage mothers to breastfeed in all public areas
  • provide for a private / discreet space for breastfeeding if needed
  • have a statement of intent / policy and have communicated this to all relevant staff
  • be no-smoking, clean and comfortable.

This register will be constantly updated as more premises obtain the award.

We are keen that breastfeeding mothers are able to give us feedback (positive or negative) about how welcoming you find the premises that have put themselves forward for the award. Please send any comments to Steven Wray, Deaprtment of Community Services, East Lothian Council, 9-11, Lodge Street, Haddington EH41 4DX or email communityservices@eaastlothian.gov.uk or pass your comment to your health visitor/midwife directly.

If you own or manage a space accessed by the public and would like to be considered for the award, please contact Steven at the address above or phone 01620 827 509 to arrange a visit.
